Pussy of the Year Nominee: Kalib Starnes

Theres nothing worse than a boring fight. A boring fight will transcend any bias, hatred or national pride. This was evident at this past UFC 83, when Surrey BC’s own Kalib Starnes went toe to toe with a reinvigorated Nate “The Rock” Quarry. Since the UFC event was taking place in Canadian soil for the first time ever, It was natural to see and especially hear booing from fans to the “non-canadian” fighters. This was pretty much the way the whole night went: canadian fighter enters, crowd cheers, american fighter enters, crowd boos. This was turning into a religious tradition until the Starnes/Quarry fight. This was can easily be one of the most boring, if not the worst fight I have ever seen. As an MMA fan, I could really care less of where you come from. I’d respect a fighter regardless of where he’s from as long as he could fight. But, as a canadian, all I really wanted was a good representation of Canadian fighters to show the world we can scrap with the best of them. Starnes represented Canadians like a George Bush representing all of Americans, we are all not like our representatives. Starnes, spent 15 minutes in the octagon running from Quarry. Starnes was LITERALLY running away from his opponent. It was a mind boggling sight, to see a fighter in the UFC not mentally show up for the biggest event he would ever be in. The fight had to go to the score cards believe it or not. and surprise surprise, Nate Quarry win by a unanimous vote 30-24. An overwhelming disgrace like this has never happened in the UFC, and its sad to happen to one of my own countryman. At one point every single time Starnes was on the Jumbo tron, the crowd boo’d, and when Quarry (an American) was shown, everyone cheered. There is no room for fights like this in the UFC. When most average joe’s order UFC PPV for +$40, there’s no room for shameful fighters. Its Either your in to fight or don’t show up at all. When Markus Naslund (Captain of the NHL’s Vancouver Canucks) start to boo you, it doesn’t mean you suck, it means you really really REALLY SUCK.

Up and Coming Artists – The D.E.Y.

The D.E.Y. is an up and coming hip hop group from the Bronx NY. This group has actually got me excited to grab their new album. Stemming from a long and glorious hiphop group traditions of the fugees and the Black Eyed Peas, the DEY will follow in their footsteps.I have to be honest, I haven’t been excited with an artist’s new album in a long time. There is something very eclectic and eccentric about the songs they have released on EP. Once I heard a few of their songs like “No Looking Back” and “Give You the World”, I was blown away. The creative and original beats mixed in with the deep insightful lyrics gave me the chills. Not since Lupe Fiasco’s Food and Liquor  did I hear true passion and unadulterated talent from a single entity in the past few years. it is a breathe of fresh air in a stagnating rap/rnb genre.

One of this years most surprising movies yet, 21 is the movie that will make you laugh, clench your teeth and finally when the movie is over…a simple ( but satisfying ) sigh. Honestly, i had no intetion of ever watching this movie. I was dragged to the theater’s by a bunch of my girlfriends who wanted to celebrate ( because one of them finally got their drivers license). Before I watched this movie, I had no idea what the story line was. But I was bombarded with so many of the movie’s crappy commercial, that i figured out that it was based on the infamous MIT Blackjack team. Knowing all I knew, I still didn’t want to watch this movie.

But there I was, sitting down in a seat for the movie premier. I suggested we go see Drillbit Taylor, but noone else did. So, in the rule of law that is peer pressure, I gave the ticket booth $8′s that I was certain I would never see again. After the first couple of scenes, I was honestly bored and was kicking myself for ever going to the movies. I kept telling myself that the only reason I was even watching the movie was Kate Bosworth. But after 10 minutes of watching the movie, I actually started to enjoy the experience. The directing in the movie wasn’t bad. Like i said before, I laughed, felt sympathy for the characters and my heart was racing from the suspense given to the audience, in the form of Laurence Fishburne ( the head security agent for some of the casino’s). It is smart, witty, and at parts hilarious.Overall I had fun in this movie and highly recommend it. I went into the movie not expecting anything, and came out blown away.
